Welcome to the Merthyr Tydfil Mendicants webpage

    Merthyr's Helping hand

The Merthyr Mendicants is a local charity, which comprises a group of dedicated fundraisers, who for the past sixty-four years have relied upon the generosity of local residents, organisations and businesses within the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil to provide financial support to local charities, organisations, youth groups and individuals, who are otherwise unable to support themselves or their projects.

Mendicants hold monthly meetings on the third Monday of each month, usually at the Conservative Club in the town centre. Meetings are recorded, forthcoming events planned and requests for financial assistance discussed and sanctioned where necessary.

Responsibility for organising social evenings and public activities rests with the entertainments sub committee, whose aim, is to raise vital funds by entertaining our regular benefactors and guests.

Chairperson's annual dinner

This annual event took place on Saturday 12th October at the Cefn Coed Rugby Club in the presence of Councillor Howard Barrett, Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil, his Consort, Councillor Lisa Mytton, honoured guests and Mendicants.

Our chairperson, John Wallbank gave the traditional speech, after which he presented the Mayor with a cheque for £500 for his chosen charity, This year Howard has selected a charity that has helped him and some of his family members personally; Macmillan Cancer Support, Merthyr Tydfil. All funds raised will go towards the wonderful work already being undertaken by Macmillan at their special Cancer Unit at Prince Charles Hospital.

The Mendicants held their October meeting in company with the Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil, Councillor Clive Tovey, who gave us a warm welcome and was the perfect host.

A big thank you to Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association for their generous gift

The Mendicants would like to express their grateful thanks to Merthyr Tydfil
Housing Association, who recently presented the charity with a cheque for
£1000. This will enable us to continue to help others within our community.

As part of Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association’s 40th anniversary celebrations,
we were their nominated charity. Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association believe
that their wider social objectives match very closely with the aims of the Mendicants.

MTHA Director of Operations, Tim Macdermott said “it is an honour to be able to
support this wonderful organisation with a grant of £1000 to assist with
their valuable work.”

 Troedyrhiw Community Primary School

The Mendicants are proud to support Troedyrhiw Community Primary School, who on Monday 13th March officially opened the first stage of their all-weather 'Let's Get Active in the Playground' activity trail, which also features a play cabin.

The physical activity trail will benefit Key Stage 2 children, after school clubs (WASPS) and scouts etc. and was made possible by the fundraising efforts of the PTA, Tesco, the Mendicants and or course the staff and children. Below are two photos taken on the day, but more are available to view by clicking the Nav bar on the left side of this page.
